London:

OTHER England DESTINATIONS

London West London

Not much more than chain-store shopping exists in and around Hammersmith and Shoreditch; it may be the place to beat the crowds of Oxford Street, but not necessarily the place for bargains. The main roads of the suburbs of Chiswick and Kew Gardens feature an interesting enough mix of brand stores and unique shops to fill an afternoon—if you’re willing to make the trek.

  • Fosters Bookshop, 183 Chiswick High Rd., Chiswick Turnham Green. One of the most charming used bookshops in London. Shelves stacked to the brim with hardcovers. Originally specializing in children’s literature, this tiny family-run shop is now a treasure trove for people all ages, offering many collector’s editions of classics and out-of-print books. Everything from vintage fairy-tale compilations to old religious texts. Prices range from £2 to £2500 (for a signed John Lennon autobiography). Open Tu-Sa 10:30am-5pm
