While Bayswater’s nightlife scene offers a few pubs and bars, most people head elsewhere for a night out.
- Arthur Baker’s Harlem Soul Food, 78 Westbourne Grove (☎020 7985 0900; www.harlemsoulfood.com), Bayswater. The British just can’t let 1776 go: now they want New York to come to London. Characterized by candles and leather booths cut into the walls, the intimate “Underground Bar” features live DJs spinning until 2:30am most nights; Diplo and the Loose Cannons are past performers. On the ground fl., the restaurant and bar serve an eclectic mix of drinks and comfort food, like balsamic and beer baby back ribs (£13) and Sugar Hill chicken pops (£7). - Mitre, 24 Craven Terr. (☎020 7262 5240; www.mitrelancastergate.com), Lancaster Gate. Set in a sprawling Victorian mansion on a quiet corner, this comfortable pub is perfect for a lazy afternoon. Restored marble fireplaces, stained-glass skylights, a piano, and outdoor seating make it a cut above the rest. Made a cameo in Woody Allen’s film Match Point. Upscale pub grub like rump steak with beárnaise or warm chicken and bacon salad £8-14. Beer from £3.20. Free Wi-Fi. Open M-Sa 11am-11:30pm, Su noon-11pm. Kitchen open noon-3pm and 6-10pm
- The Swan, 66 Bayswater Rd. Lancaster Gate. Claims to have been the final drinking place for victims of the gallows that once stood nearby; now welcomes a slightly more upbeat crowd. A large patio and upstairs balcony are great places to relax with a pint (£3.10) and enjoy the view of Kensington Gardens directly across the street. Burgers and sandwiches £4.50-7; meat from the carvery with vegetables and potatoes £9. Public hangings M high noon. F-Su nights live acoustic music. Open M-Sa 10am-11:30pm, Su 10am-11pm
