From the spectacle of Santander’s El Sardinero beaches to the provincial park of Oyambre, it’s the coast that makes Cantabria famous. Though it has yet to see the resort build-up of Spain’s southern shores, the region’s beach towns, declared by some to have the world’s cleanest surfing water, are by no means untouched or secluded. Cantabria also has hiking in the Picos de Europa, Paleolithic cave drawings, and renowned architecture, including Gaudí’s El Capricho and the 12th-century Colegiata de Santa Juliana in Santillana del Mar.
