Take out your walking stick and rev up your engines. Hiking or motorbiking—or a combination of the two—lets you cruise among rural villages independent of sporadic bus schedules. On foot, you’ll cross through graceful hills, passing mountain goats and wildflowers along the way. To the delight of climbers, 80% of the Greek landscape is mountainous. Clamber to the abode of the gods at Mount Olympus, ascending over 2900 steep, stunning meters to one of its eight peaks. During the summer, Dionysus’s old watering hole, Mount Parnassos, makes a great hiking and mountain biking trip. The traditional villages of the Zagorohoria and their surrounding wilderness turn mere walking into an enticing adventure. On Mount Athos, trails verge on sublime, as the paths from monastery to monastery scramble over grass-carpeted crags and yield divine views of the sea below. Neighboring Vikos Gorge , the world’s steepest canyon, challenges hikers with a 6hr. trek, while the western coast of Kalymnos provides some of the best climbs—and pubs—in Greece. Samaria Gorge and the quieter Valley of Death in Crete plunge you below eagles’ nests and around trees that cling to the steep canyon sides. The trails around Zakros wind up to Zeus’s childhood hiding place, Kamares Cave.
