While beachgoers and city-lovers flock to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Cataluña’s Pyrenees draw a different breed of traveler. Bikinis are tossed aside for wool socks, as hikers and skiers, mostly from Spain and France, migrate to the region’s refined ski resorts, with some of Spain’s wildest mountain scenery. Meanwhile, history and architecture buffs, notebooks in hand, eagerly explore the tranquil mountain towns filled with well-preserved Romanesque buildings and bridges. Unless you happen upon some of the few visiting teachers brought into the region, do not expect to hear much English around here. Foreign tourists can be extremely rare in some parts, and Spanish is a second language for many locals. Nonetheless, do not let this deter you. The grandeur of this mountain sanctuary should not be missed.
