Central and Western Queensland are not frequented by backpackers, and they offer a very different experience of Australian culture from the coastal communities. The roads across Queensland’s interior are long, flat, and straight, crossing immense distances dotted with tiny towns. Central Queensland is filled with coal mines, and the increased trade with Asia has led to a boom in the economy and job market. Western Queensland, on the other hand, suffers from a harsh, hot environment, which has led to a very slow pace of outback life. The drive offers varied topography, ranging from spectacular gorges and mountains to red dirt and vast expanses of bushland.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
