Central And Western Queensland Overview

Central and Western Queensland are not frequented by backpackers, and they offer a very different experience of Australian culture from the coastal communities. The roads across Queensland’s interior are long, flat, and straight, crossing immense distances dotted with tiny towns. Central Queensland is filled with coal mines, and the increased trade with Asia has led to a boom in the economy and job market. Western Queensland, on the other hand, suffers from a harsh, hot environment, which has led to a very slow pace of outback life. The drive offers varied topography, ranging from spectacular gorges and mountains to red dirt and vast expanses of bushland.

  • Sharing The Road. Driving through this region is an adventure; some of the highways require battles with roadtrains that demand more road than exists. Highways are graveyards for kangaroos; they line the pavement from collisions with the passing trucks. Don’t drive between dusk and dawn when the marsupials are most active. While they are all too easy for the massive trucks to brush aside, they can be deadly for drivers in compact cars.
