The Cliffs of Moher form the most famous part of the Clare coastline, with limestone walls soaring 213m over the Atlantic. The spectacular scenery is not limited to this single tourist spot, however; the majority of the western coastline of Clare is composed of similarly thrilling cliffs, and scenic walks and drives delight travelers who trek past the typical tour-bus route, discovering their own favorite ledges, islands, and coves as they go. In several places, the cliffs have lost the battle with the Atlantic, and sandy beaches at Lahinch and Kilkee lie low within the rocky landscape. The southern border of Clare looks across the River Shannon at Kerry from small maritime towns.
