The towns immediately west of Dublin in Co. Kildare are still well within the city’s orbit. The best sights—Kildare’s horses and Castletown House—can be visited as easy daytrips from the capital. From the 13th to the 16th century, the Fitzgerald Earls of Kildare controlled all of eastern Ireland. Today, mansions and the big-money Irish Derby evoke Kildare’s former prominence. The Irish National Stud rears horses that win the world’s greatest derbies, at the Curragh Racecourse.
