Founded as a medieval fortress in 1341, Dessau flourished under Princess Henrietta Katharina von Oranien in the 18th century. Famous residents include Moses Mendelssohn, a great German-Jewish philosopher and a fervent proponent of religious tolerance in the 19th century, and composer/playwright Kurt Weill, whose works encouraged artistic resistance against Nazism. Today, Dessau draws international visitors to its two UNESCO world treasures: the Bauhaus experiment in Modernist architecture, and the stunning gardens of Schloß Georgium.
