Anchored by Lihue, the county seat, the East Shore is Kauai’s center of government and commerce. Most of the island’s population is concentrated up and down the East Shore, and a multitude of restaurants and shopping centers cater to tourists and visitors. Drop your bags and buy your groceries here, but seek beauty and adventure elsewhere. The area north of Lihue, also known as the Coconut Coast, provides an easily accessible sample of many of Kauai’s attractions, from heiau (temples) to boat rides on the Wailua River.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
