A former Zeppelin construction base, Friedrichshafen (pop. 14,000) had trouble getting back off the ground after Allied bombings in 1944. The town was finally rebuilt with broad waterfront promenades, which today are some of the longest on Lake Constance. The city’s tree-lined boulevards—only slightly less crowded than those of Constance—break onto sweeping panoramas of the jagged Alps by day, while at night the twin orbs of the Schloßkirche’s onion domes stand half-illuminated against a pastel sky.
