A trip to Hu\ is not complete without a short excursion to the history-infused, ruin-strewn countryside. The highlights, of course, are the Royal Tombs, the grandiose burial sites of Vietnam’s former emperors.
Thuæn An. Heading northeast from Hu\ leads to the wave-lined shore of ThuÆn An. Only 13km from the city center, this pristine beach is abandoned during weekday mornings and early afternoons, but visitors flock here in the evenings and on weekends. The golden, burning sand stretches south alongside warm, green-blue waters. Colorful covered lawnchairs provide protection from the beating sun and can be rented at the beach (M-F about 10,000, Sa-Su 20,000-30,000). Try renting a large inner tube (10,000) from one of the tents; few things are more enjoyable than rocking back and forth on the wavy sea. As you venture farther east along the beach, the number of visitors, vendors, and seaside eateries you’ll see decreases. Stalls and showers (2000) are behind the food and drink shops. Cafes and restaurants line the beach, and fresh seafood is available for 30,000-60,000. (Buses leave from ®ng Ba Market every hr. 5:30am-3pm for 5500. Only one bus makes the journey back into the city. To catch it, walk back from the beach onto the main road and flag down the bus as it rumbles back at 3 or 4pm. Motorbikes are 30,000 each way; taxis are 90,000 each way. To reach the water by yourself, follow Lˆ Li as it makes its way east and turns into Nguy[n Sinh Cung. Continue on the winding road for 6km until the Huda factory. Take a right and continue for about 7km. Look for signs to the beach.)
