Southeast of Melbourne, the Princes Hwy. snakes toward the border of neighboring New South Wales, loosely following the contours of the Victoria coast through verdant wilderness that is interspersed with small, quiet towns and extensive lake systems. Gippsland is largely rural and sparsely populated; its towns aren’t a huge draw for tourists. But many of the area’s national parks and coastal reserves are magnificent enough to warrant a trip through the boring towns and farmland that make up the rest of Gippsland.
