Ba T£ is the name of a small town in southern Qu=ng Ngãi Province, as well as of the mountainous district that surrounds it. While this area is quite beautiful, the town itself is unremarkable. The main reason to visit is the town’s unique history: it’s the site of the first Communist guerrilla action in Vietnam. In response to the occupying Japanese forces during World War II, the local Communist Party cell organized a small guerilla army. After months of secret meetings and battle training in Ba T£ and the surrounding mountains, the motley rebels seized the town on March 11, 1945. After that, Ba T£ and Qu=ng Ngãi became Communist strongholds. Today, the uprising is commemorated by a small museum. On the whole, the museum needs a lot of help, but it does house original Party literature from the 1930s and 1940s, as well as the machetes, spears, and handmade rifles used during the insurrection. Outside, visitors can purchase crafts made for tourists by the local H’re people. (Open daily 7am-5pm. Free.)
Ba T£ is 70km south of Qu=ng Ngãi. From Qu=ng Ngãi, go south down Hwy. 1A until you reach Hwy. 24, where you take a right. Buses are nearly impossible to find; motorbikes are your best bet, with round trips starting at 100,000. The ride should last around 2hr. round-trip.
