Paseo de Diego, in Río Piedras , is a pedestrian boulevard lined with clothing stores and fast-food restaurants. The clothing stores run the gamut from American chains like Foot Locker to bargain-basement wholesalers. Old San Juan is a great place to shop for hokey Puerto Rican souvenirs, designer clothing, local artwork, and expensive jewelry: meander through the narrow cobblestone streets and see what catches your eye. C. Fortaleza has an abundance of souvenir and clothing shops, while stores on C. San Francisco are almost all high-end jewelry shops. A designer store outlet strip (with staples like Coach and Ralph Lauren) sits on C. Del Cristo. C. San José and C. del Cristo are the best places to find original (and expensive) Puerto Rican modern art.
More generic shopping awaits in Hato Rey, at Plaza las Américas, the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean. This three-story extravaganza has over 300 stores, two movie theaters, a food court, a ticket center, a fountain, a multi-story Old Navy, and everything else you could want in a mall. (Av. F.D. Roosevelt 525, in Hato Rey. Take Expreso Las Américas to the Av. F. D. Roosevelt exit. The B21 bus route goes around the mall. ☎767-5202. Open M-Sa 9am-9pm, Su 11am-5pm.)
