Golden Bay is where Abel Tasman first spotted Aotearoa in 1642. After a brief encounter with local Maori, he quickly turned tail and dubbed the area “Murderer’s Bay.” Having shed that unfortunate moniker, Golden Bay is now synonymous with earth-centered lifestyles and draws Auckland urbanites, international hippies, and retired ex-pats with its beaches and sprawling wilderness.
