Tiny Goslar (pop. 45,700) is one of Niedersachsen’s most historic and culturally prominent cities. Spared from WWII air raids by proclaiming neutrality, and home to an avant-garde art institution, the Mönchehaus, historic Goslar holds a fluid mixture of half-timbered homes and modern sculptures. The town’s beauty and proximity to the Harz Mountains draw intimidating crowds of tourists, but the town retains the charm that once lured Goethe and Henry Moore.
