Mexico City offers over 1000 hotels. Rooms abound in the centro histórico and near the Alameda Central. The best budget bargains can be found near the Monumento a la Revolución in the streets around the Plaza de la República. Avoid the sections around the Alameda and anywhere that makes you feel uncomfortable. Beware of any hotel marked “Hotel Garage,” where patrons enter rooms directly from the garage for illicit rendezvous. Rooms for 180-250 pesos for one bed and 250-300 pesos for two beds should be clean and have carpeting, a TV, and a telephone. Some budget hotels charge according to the number of beds, not per person, and beds tend to be large enough for two. If you don’t mind snuggling (or need an excuse), sharing a bed can save major pesos. Finally, always ask to look at a room before you accept it; this is easier to do after check-out time (noon-3pm).
