Natural wonders lie a short jaunt from downtown Auckland in Hauraki Gulf, which consists of 57 islands. Volcanic Rangitoto makes for an educational daytrip through the enchanting forests of Pohutukawa, while Waiheke harbors an artsy vacation community. Great Barrier Island appeals with its lack of traffic, crowds, and electricity, as well as its pristine beaches. Another island worth a look is Tiritiri Matangi, an uninhabited bird and plant sanctuary, protected since February 2000. 360 Discovery runs round-trip boats from Auckland that allow for a day on Tiritiri.
