Tucked between the Murray River and Gippsland’s coastal forest is high country, a lush contrast to the iconic ocean vistas and scorched red rocks of the Outback. Mere hills compared to the skyscraping ranges of other continents, Victoria’s high country is nonetheless a favored destination for Australian winter sports enthusiasts. In the summer, the region’s terrain challenges even the most seasoned hikers, climbers, and mountain bikers. Bright is the only budget hub in the area, although the Falls Creek Resort has a hostel and is somewhat open in summer; the other resorts more or less shut down after ski season.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
