The Hume Hwy. links Melbourne and Sydney via 872km of relatively unspectacular scenery; intrepid travelers who venture off the Hume, however, are rewarded. Quaint mining towns and ski resorts are sprinkled throughout the sunburnt hills. Farther west along the Murray Valley Hwy. are the billabongs of Yarrawonga and Cobram, perfect for fishing, swimming, and relaxing, especially as the towns themselves snooze in the summer.
