The small town of Ilmenau (pop. 33,000) is very proud of its most famous visitor, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Residents are quick to point out that Goethe came to their town a total of 28 times, racking up over 220 days on their soil. The author first worked in Ilmenau as a mining minister under the Duke of Weimar, but later returned to seek inspiration from the stunning natural surroundings. The town uses Goethe to lure visitors, flaunting his former haunts as well as the Goethewanderweg, one of the many trails that leads from Ilmenau into the forest. Today, the technical university sets the tone in Ilmenau, and the areas below the Altstadt swell with students.
