Northeast Puerto Rico has several extraordinary natural attractions within a relatively small area, making it easy for visitors to take a daytrip from San Juan to explore the island’s great outdoors. This area encompasses the lush rainforest of the central east and the turquoise Atlantic waters of the north. Playa Luquillo and Balneario Seven Seas are beautiful palm-tree-lined crescents of sand, good for both swimming and sunbathing. La Cordillera, an archipelago off Fajardo, looks like a series of desert oases in the midst of the deep blue Caribbean. At night, Fajardo’s bay glows with natural luminescence. However, the highlight of the northeast lies inland. The tropical rainforest of El Yunque, the largest protected area on the island, inspires pride in residents and awe in visitors. You can “see” El Yunque in one day, and even summit El Yunque mountain in about 2hr., but camping offers visitors the opportunity for more quality time in the forest. The only downside to visiting this region is the heavy traffic on Hwy. 3 from San Juan, but, with that behind you, prepare to be astounded by unparalleled natural beauty.
