Jökulsárgljúfur National Park Overview

The Jökulsa á Fjöllum River flows into Jökulsárgljúfur, site of Vatnajökull National Park, from the Vatnajökull glacier to the south, creating astounding waterfalls throughout the region. Jökulsárgljúfur is a trek from any transport hub, but the park’s magnificent Dettifoss waterfall amply compensates travelers who make the journey. Jökulsárgljúfur’s third major waterfall, Hafragilsfoss, is 2km downstream from Dettifoss. The Hafragilsfoss parking area has a majestic view of both the waterfall and the canyon below. At the northernmost part of the park is Ásbyrgi, a gorgeous horseshoe shaped canyon. A rental car , preferably four-wheel-drive, is often the cheapest and easiest way to reach Jökulsárgljúfur. Tour buses can bring you to the park, but often leave little time to see the sights, unless you camp overnight. The cheapest bus tours are run by SBA (☎550 0700; www.sba.is), partnered with Reykjavík Excursions, and leave at varying times from Akureyri and Húsavík. Check with the local tourist offices to book a trip. (Tours from mid-June to Aug. from 8700ISK.)
