During the navy occupation, the west side of Vieques was used to store artillery shells, bombs, and other supplies used for live-fire exercises on the east side of the island. When the Navy left in 2003, the bunkers storing these supplies were emptied. Now they stand unused in the hills - deserted, dark, and...kind of spooky.

From San Juan International Airport, there are a few different ways to get to the island of Vieques. Some people take the ferry, but we decided to go by plane, the more convenient (and fun) option. We learned a few lessons along the way though...most important being: make sure you get there early when flying small airlines! They might close...
