The Jurassic Period derived its name from the Jura mountain range—formerly an ocean floor with abundant paleontological treasures. Travelers often overlook the mountains, flocking instead to the younger, pointier Alps to the south. Smoothed by time, the Jura provide slightly easier—but no less scenic—hiking, biking, and skiing trails. Relatively un-touristed towns in the area provide convenient bases for exploration and have some of the lowest prices in France.
