If ever an island was well named, it is Kangaroo Island (locally known as KI; pop. 4500). One of the most spectacular destinations in Australia, Kangaroo Island has everything a nature lover could want in 4350 sq. km. With 21 national and local conservation parks on the island, you are sure to see kangaroos and koalas, snakes and seals, penguins and pelicans, and everything in between. KI has been isolated from the mainland for several long periods over the last 50 million years, giving its wildlife the chance to evolve on its own. You’ll find species on KI that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. The hikes through astounding landscapes showcase the wildlife as well as impressive rock formations, limestone caves, and rugged sea cliffs. From lazing on near-deserted beaches to action-packed cave crawling, diving with leafy sea dragons to duneboarding and surfing, KI is a getaway that can’t be surpassed. Budget travelers be forewarned: getting here is an expensive proposition, and there is no public transportation. While a car is the best way to see the island, many of the two- to three-day tours catch the highlights at reasonable prices.
