The biggest of the Ionian Islands, Kefallonia rises high above sea level with grand peaks and plunging cliffs. Mountainous terrain and austere coastlines present logistical problems. Since Kefallonia lacks convenient public transportation, the best way to explore it is by car. The winding roads perched on cliff edges, along with Greek drivers, can make driving an adrenaline-filled activity, but the pebble beaches, craggy hills, and more than 250km of coastline make it worth the trouble. If you’re traveling without a car, you may have to stick closer to the towns, but daily cruises and local beaches are a nice way to get a feel for the island.
