Ubiquitous Biergärten (beer gardens) serve savory snacks and booze throughout Munich. For an authentic Bavarian lunch, spread some brezeln (pretzels) with leberwurst (liverwurst) or cheese. Weißwürste(white veal sausages) are another favorite, served with sweet mustard and a soft pretzel on the side; real Müncheners only eat them before 11am. Slice the skin open and devour their tender meat. Leberkäse, a local lunch, is a pinkish mix of ground beef and bacon. Leberknödel are liver dumplings served in soup or with kraut (cabbage). Kartoffelknödel (potato dumplings) and semmelknödel (bread and egg dumplings) should be eaten with a hearty chunk of meat. Vegetarians can enjoy käsespätzle (egg noodles baked with cheese) or a plate of spargel (asparagus) with a germknödel (a sweet, jelly-filled dumpling topped with vanilla sauce) for dessert. For traditional brews, simply ask for “ein Bier” to get the house specialty on tap. You can also specify the type of beer you want, as opposed to the brand, such as Weiß (white), Dunkel (dark), or Hell (bright) to get the house version. The quarter of Munich's population born outside of Germany supplies the city with Turkish, Pakistani, Ethiopian, and Japanese cuisines.
