München (Munich) Nightlife

Bavaria agreed to become a part of a larger Germany on one condition: that it be allowed to maintain its beer purity laws. Since then, Munich has remained loyal to its six great labels: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten-Franziskaner.United, they provide Müncheners and tourists alike with all the fuel they need for late-night revelry. Four main types of beer are served in Munich: Helles, a standard light beer with a crisp, sharp taste, Dunkles, a dark beer with a heavier, fuller flavor, Weißbier, a smooth, cloudy blond beer made from wheat instead of barley, and Radler or Russ'n a “shandy” or “cyclist's brew”; half beer and half lemon soda with a light, fruity taste. Munich's beer is typically 5% alcohol, though during Starkbierzeit, the first two weeks of Lent, Müncheners traditionally drink Starkbier, a dark beer that is 8-10% alcohol. Daring travelers can go for a full liter of beer, known as a Maß (€5-7).Specify if you want a halb-Maß (.5L, €3-4), since only Weißbier is almost exclusively served in 0.5L sizes. While some beer gardens offer veggie dishes, vegetarians may wish to eat elsewhere before a post-meal swig. It's traditional to bring your own food to outdoor beer halls—drinks, however, must be bought at the Biergarten. Bare tables usually indicate cafeteria-style selbstbedienung (self-service).
