Beautiful, quiet Koblenz (pop. 105,900) sits at the point where the Rhein and Mosel rivers meet, an occasion which led the Romans to name the city confluentes (confluence) or Deutsches Eck (German Corner). The city has been strategically coveted by every empire seeking to conquer Europe in the last two millenia. Before reunification, Koblenz was West Germany’s largest munitions dump, but the blasts that light up the city now are decorative—Koblenz turns into a flaming spectacle during Rhein in Flammen (August 8, 2009).
