At the mouth of the Rhein, Constance (pop. 82,000) rubs elbows with Switzerland and Austria. Its location saved the elegant university town from bombardment in WWII, as the Allies were leery of accidentally striking its neighbors. The unique location has lent the city cultural diversity with an international flair. Crooked streets wind around delicate Baroque and Renaissance facades in the central part of town. Gabled and turreted 19th-century houses, seemingly imported from the Mediterranean coast, line the river promenades. The green waters of the Bodensee lap the beaches and harbors while, farther out, countless sailboats and ships cruise the waters. Though much of the Bodensee is overrun by tourists, Constance’s large student population keeps the city—and its prices—somewhat grounded.
