Lübeck is a perfectly medieval town, with two specialties: churches and marzipan. These specialties make strange but enjoyable bedfellows. Travelers can enjoy the sweetest indulgences in one of Germany's best confectionaries, and then repent for their gluttony in the cavernous interior of a colossal kirche. Lübeck was also home to creative giants Thomas and Horace Mann, and Günter Grass. Today their immaculately restored homes are impressive museums of these men's literary and artistic geniuses. Though not all of Lübeck's buildings are as well preserved, and massive chain stores and horrid '70s era architecture have crept into the streets, Lübeck retains a distinctly ancient feel. Once the capital city of the Hanseatic League, Lübeck basks in the medieval ambiance and munches on marzipan.
