Traveling by bike makes the most of any visit to the Heide. The tourist offices in Lüneburg and Celle have information on self-guided and group tours, the most popular of which are outlined in maps available for purchase. The most popular is an 80km route that follows main roads through the expansive woods and pastures near Lüneburg and neighboring Harburg. The tour is marked only with tiny white and green bicycle signs, so bring a map. Horseback tours are also offered at a number of local farms. Surprisingly, the best source of hiking information is not tourist offices, but bookstores.
