Though relatively moderate, the weather in the Netherlands nevertheless fluctuates from season to season; its only year-round characteristic is rain—and lots of it (for average temperatures and rainfall). Throngs of human and mosquito visitors pack the city’s parks and streets in the summer high season (June-Aug.), when temperatures rarely exceed typical comfort levels. The crowds are thinner in the spring and fall, but dress gets bulkier. During these months, the Dutch are greeted almost daily with a playful, cool fog that usually dissolves into an ineffectual stream of sunshine by midday. In the depths of winter—and low season—mostly empty canals and streets frost over.

For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
