The whole of Leidseplein is really a sight unto itself, presenting a unique combination of gaudy bars and stately old theaters. During the day, the square is packed with street performers as well as promoters for pub crawls and other assorted nightlife; at night, the revelry continues in a bath of neon light and cheap beer. A walk down the Weteringschans will take you past some beautiful buildings, including the church that has been repurposed as the nightclub Paradiso and the Barlaeus Gymnasium, an extremely famous Dutch secondary school dating from the 19th century.
