The Jordaan and Canal Ring compete ferociously to be the best destination for top-quality contemporary art. In the former, the area bounded by Prinsengracht, Lijnbaansgracht, Elandsgracht, and Bloemgracht has myriad galleries that specialize in cutting-edge pieces and installations. In the latter, a stretch of Lijnbaansgracht just east of Vijzelstraat is home to nine excellent, welcoming galleries. Best of all, the galleries along this convivial canal all hold their openings every few months on the same night: be sure to find out the date and get there early. The best way to plan a gallery-hop of Amsterdam’s better spaces is to get your hands on a copy of AKKA’s gallery guide and map (www.akka.nl/agenda). The free monthly Uitkrant (www.uitkrant.nl), available at the AUB and other locations, also has gallery listings and reviews. Gallery entrance fees range considerably and change often depending on events, installations, and tours.
