The less-famous sister of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, the Limestone Coast offers all that a tourist could want: bushwalking in Aboriginal reserves, surfing along the Southern Ocean, and wine tasting in some up-and-coming vineyards. As the name suggests, limestone is the key to many of the region’s attractions: it creates the beautiful formations in the Tantanoola and Naracoorte caves, lines the Mt. Gambier volcano crater, and gives the Coonawarra Cabernets their full-bodied flavor. South Australia is infamous for its unreliable public transportation, and the Limestone Coast, no exception to the rule, is best experienced by car. That said, Premier Stateliner buses (☎08 8415 5500; www.premierstateliner.com.au) pass through daily on the Adelaide to Mt. Gambier run.
