Amsterdam:

Wadden Islands (Waddeneilanden)

Tucked away off the northwestern coast of the Netherlands and inauspiciously named (wadden means “mud flat”), the Wadden Islands are an unassuming vacation destination. The Dutch wouldn’t have it any other way; they’re happy to keep these idyllic islands to themselves. Even when Netherlanders flock here during the summer, the islands feel sleepy and isolated. Deserted bike paths wind through stretches of grazing land and lead to some of Europe’s most pristine nature reserves. The islands offer excellent beaches where the sun-warmed shallows of the Waddenzee make for temperate swimming. Though transit can tax the wallet of the budget traveler, abundant campsites, good hostels, and legion picnic sites render a trip to these resplendent islands affordable.

The islands arc around the northwest of the Netherlands. Texel, closest to Amsterdam, is the largest and most populated. Vlieland is a sleepy stretch of endless beaches. Terschelling, the middle of the five, bustles with nightlife and nature preserves. The fourth and fifth islands, remote Ameland and remoter Schiermonnikoog, fill out the archipelago. Most people travel from the mainland town of Den Helder to Texel and from Harlingen to the others; island hopping is possible but sometimes difficult with the ferry schedules, so plan in advance.

  • Wheel And Deal. Consider spending a few extra euro to rent a bike with more than one gear, especially if you’re visiting multiple islands, to help take you up and down the paths through the dunes with ease. If you’re staying more than a few days, negotiate a better rate than the daily price.
