The Sierra de Guadarrama is a cold, clear, and dry retreat from Madrid’s noise and pollution. If Madrid’s urbane sophistication has got you down, consider spending an afternoon (or a few days) in the Sierra, a pine-covered mountain range halfway between Madrid and Segovia. With La Mujer Muerta (The Dead Woman) to the west, the Sierra de la Maliciosa (Mountains of the Evil Woman) to the east, and the less imaginatively named Siete Picos (Seven Peaks) along its northern perimeter, the Sierra draws visitors in all seasons to hike and ski.
