Nestled in the foothills of southern Veracruz, Los Tuxtlas are a relaxing trio. The three towns—San Andrés Tuxtla, Santiago Tuxtla, and Catemaco—have distinct personalities. With cheap, quality accommodations and transportation options, the relatively large town of San Andrés Tuxtla makes a good base for exploring the foothills. Only 30min. from the Olmec site of Tres Zapotes, the small Santiago Tuxtla is primarily an archaeological stop. More touristed Catemaco is known for its brujería (witchcraft) and beautiful lagoon.
