Three hundred and sixty-five islands, one for every day of the year, dot Lough Corrib. The lough, Ireland’s largest, has enough elbow room for all of them. The eastern shores of Lough Corrib and Lough Mask stretch easily into fertile farmland. The west slips into bog, quartzite scree, and the famously rough Connemara country. The island of Inchagoill, in the middle of the lough, has the second-oldest existing Christian monuments in Europe. Lough Corrib is one of Europe’s best spots for salmon and trout angling, the principal activity on shore and boat.
