München (Munich) Overview

No trip to Germany is complete without a voyage to friendly Bavaria, and the populous city of Munich, a city probably responsible alone for your beer-soaked, festive image of German life. The city and its surroundings are as different as can be from modernist Berlin or industrial Hamburg. Munich's Catholic heritage—the city's name comes from the Benedictine monks who founded it, and who also built the magnificent abbey and brewery combo in Andechs, just a short daytrip away—has always lent the city a merrier feel. Get merry yourself in the traditional pubs or festivals, or in the thumping clubs of the Schwabing, the university area. Recuperate with a trip to the glorious countryside of Starnberg am Starnberger See, and try out the cold lake water if you're still feeling the night before.
