Calorie-counters beware: Lisboa has some of the cheapest, most irresistible restaurants of the western European capitals, not to mention the best wine. A full dinner costs about €9-11 per person and the prato do dia (daily special) is often only €5-7. Between lunch and dinner, snack on cheap, filling, and addictive Portuguese pastries. Lisboa boasts almost as many pastelarias as Spain has tapas bars, and abounds with seafood specialties such as pratos de caracois (snail dishes), creme de mariscos (seafood chowder with tomatoes), and bacalhau cozido com grão e batatas (cod with chickpeas and boiled potatoes, doused in olive oil). For a more diverse selection, head up to the winding streets of Bairro Alto where you’ll find many international restaurants.
