Lisboa Theater, Music, And Film

Teatro Nacional de Dona Maria II, Pr. Dom Pedro IV, stages performances of classical and foreign plays. (☎213 25 08 00. Tickets €5-20.) At Lisboa’s largest theater, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, R. Serpa Pinto, 9, near the Museu do Chiado in Bairro Alto, opera reigns from late December to mid-June, and the Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa plays from December to July. (☎213 25 30 45. Tickets €7-60. Open M-F 1-7pm, performance days 1pm until 30min. prior to shows.)

The São Jorge movie theater, Av. da Liberdade, 175 (☎213 10 34 00) is one of the oldest in Portugal. Daily shows are held between 2:30 and 9:30pm. Ten-screen cinemas are also located in the Amoreiras (☎213 81 02 00; M: Marquês de Pombal), the Colombo shopping center (☎217 11 36 00; M: Colegio Militar Luz), and on the top floor of the Centro Vasco da Gama (☎218 93 06 01; M: Oriente). The largest theater, with 14 screens, is part of the El Corte Inglés shopping complex (☎213 71 17 00; M: São Sebastião). American films are shown with Portuguese subtitles. Movies cost about €7; matinee shows are slightly less.
