Portuguese bullfighting differs from the Spanish variety in that the bull is typically not killed in the ring, but butchered afterwards, a tradition that dates back to the 18th century. These spectacles take place most Thursdays from late June to late September at Praça de Touros de Lisboa, Campo Pequeno. (☎217 93 21 43. Open daily 10pm-2am.) The newly renovated praça doubles as a shopping center during the day and also features the distinctly Portuguese toureio equestre, or horseback bullfighting at night. Aficionados should include Santarém in their travel plans—it’s the capital of Portuguese bullfighting and hosts the most celebrated cavaleiros.
