Mid-Atlantic Overview

From the Eastern seaboard of New York south through Virginia, the mid-Atlantic states claim many of the nation’s major historical, political, and economic centers. This region has witnessed the rotation of US capitals: first Philadelphia, PA; then Princeton, NJ; Annapolis, MD; Trenton, NJ; New York, NY; and finally Washington, D.C. During the Civil War, the mid-Atlantic even housed the Confederate capital, Richmond, VA. Urban centers cover much of the land, but the great outdoors have survived. The Appalachian Trail meanders through the region, and New York’s Adirondacks compose the largest national park in the lower 48 states.
