Before joining the Rhein at Koblenz, the Mosel River meanders slowly past sun-drenched hills, scenic towns, and ancient castles. The slopes don’t compare to the Rhein’s narrow gorge, but the less-touristed vineyards on the gentle hillsides have been pressing quality wines since the Romans first cultivated them 2000 years ago. The valley’s scenery is best viewed by boat, bus, or bicycle, as the train between Koblenz and Trier cuts through unremarkable countryside rather than following the river. Passenger boats no longer make the complete run, but companies run daily trips along shorter stretches in summer.
