Travelers in the low season (mid-Sept. to May) score cheaper airfares and accommodations and dodge the tourist hordes. But budget travelers beware: many sights, hostels, B&Bs, and tourist offices close in the winter, and in some rural areas, local transportation is either severely limited or may shut down completely. Most of Ireland’s best festivals also occur in the summer. Irish weather is relatively constant; rain, like Guinness and craic, abounds in Ireland. The southeastern coast is relatively dry and sunny, while western Ireland is considerably wetter and cloudier. July and August are the warmest months, but May and June are the sunniest. December and January are very rainy and cold. Year-round, take heart—cloudy mornings often clear by noon.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
