Navarra is a historically independent kingdom that formed in the Middle Ages from eastern segments of the Basque country as a wedge against aggressive neighbors. The religiously and politically conservative region sided with the fiercely Catholic Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War, but Navarrans also throw the country’s wildest parties—Pamplona’s Fiestas de San Fermín (July 6-14) are undoubtedly the most (in)famous. Aside from summer partying, Navarra is the entry point to Spain on the Camino de Santiago and home to pastoral mountain villages famed for cheese-making and quality hiking and cycling.
